Bagdogra Airport Sets Records - Accords All Time Highest Passenger Load, 90% Are Tourists
On Tuesday, for the first time, the monthly passenger load at Bagdogra Airport has crossed 2 lakh in May 2017. Usually, the passenger load in the month of May remains high. In May 2016, the passenger load was around 1.8 lakh. This year it touched 2 lakh on Tuesday morning and it would be around 2.15 lakh by Wednesday evening. Rakesh Sahay, Director of Bagdogra Airport, said: "Around 90 per cent of the passenger load is of tourists. Thus, it goes up in the month of May as there are vacations in schools and colleges." In connection with the increase in the passenger load in the month of May compared to that of the last year's, Sahay said that Dooars has now gained immense popularity as a tourist spot and people from different parts of the country are visiting the place. At present, 23 flights operate from Bagdogra per day on three days a week while 24 flights operate on the four other days. "Moreover, at present we have direct flight service from Mumbai and Bangalore. All the flights get 100 percent full now a days. Last year, we didn't have the non-stop flights from Mumbai and Bengaluru. The Bengaluru one is temporary till June 31," he said. With 2 lakh passenger load, the revenue generation has touched Rs 1 crore in the month of May.
