Strong Earthquake Hits Afghanistan

Earthquake struck northeast Afghanistan, with shaking felt as far away as the Afghan capital Kabul and parts of Pakistan and Tajikistan, residents and seismologists say. Only few details were immediately available.

The earthquake, which struck at about 8:32 p.m. Afghanistan time (9:02 p.m. in Pakistan), was centered in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, about 69 kilometers southeast of Fayzabad, according to seismologists.

An initial report put the preliminary magnitude of Tuesday’s earthquake at about 5.4, but the estimate is still preliminary. It said the earthquake struck relatively deep, about 180 kilometers below the surface, which means shaking was felt across a wide region.

Tremors were felt in various parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan, including the Afghan capital Kabul and cities in Pakistan such as Peshawar, Abbottabad and Kohat. There was no immediate information about possible damage or casualties.

Middle age man commits suicide by jumping infront of a train near Siliguri

A man said to be in his forties jumped in front of a local train heading to Katihar from Siliguri junction today morning around 11am near Naxalbari station at Panitanki outpost. The body of the man was cut into two halves. Sources say the deceased looks like a Nepali and could be a resident of Nepal as the incident took place near India-Nepal border. The train was immediately stopped after the incident. The body was later recovered by the railway staff and sent for post mortem. Train services resumed after a delay of 30 minutes said sources.
