Sikkims Yougan Tamang and Malavika Rai make us proud - receive Global Youth Award 2016
Yougan Tamang from Jorethang, South Sikkim and Malavika Rai from Gangtok, East Sikkim were conferred with the prestigious awards in the closing ceremony of the World Youth Conference 2016 which was held from 12th November -14th November 2016 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
Yougan Tamang was conferred with the Global Youth Award 2016 along with the Sangai Young Leader Award 2016 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to empower youths of the state of Sikkim and country. Malavika Rai was conferred with the Sangai Young Leader Award 2016 respectively. The awards is given every year by the organisers to the selected young leaders of the world for Excellence in Development Work and the award recognises the highest inspiring young people of different countries of the world whose development work have a significant impact on the people and the communities in their country or region.
Yougan Tamang had received the award letter in the month of June mentioning him to be the one of the awardees in the World Youth Conference 2016 organised by the International Youth Committee and Indo-European Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises in partnership with e-platform, Commonwealth Youth Council, African Network of Youth Policy Experts, My Home India, Ashoka and Youth Venture. The conference was held with the theme ‘Youth for Sustainable Development’ where more than 230 delegates from different countries viz, Afghanistan, Argentina, Liberia, Sudan, Egypt, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, England, Indonesia, Malaysia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Nigeria etc had participated. Yougan Tamang and Malavika Rai had presented a presentation on the Sustainable Development Goals and the Inclusion of the LGBTQ: Overview and Perspectives (Sikkim and Darjeeling); Action and Vision during the conference.
They also highlighted on how the Government of Sikkim and the Chief Minister of Sikkim is serious about the various sustainable development goals. The duos highlighted on how Sikkim stands first organic state today , along with various achievement, accolades and awards in the various areas of maintaining sustainable development in the state. The spoke about how plastics, fire crackers, use of styrofoam, 10 minutes to earth, paryavaran mahotsav and organic farming is helping the state to remain one of the greenest and cleanest state in the country.
The conference was attended by various national and international delegates, Ambassadors of countries to India, President of the European Youth Parliament for Water, Founder of e-platform, Academicians, Authors, Venture Capitalist etc.
Yougan Tamang is currently a Ph.D Scholar, Founder of social platform, iVolunteerYOU (www.ivolunteeryou.org), Blogger, Youtuber and a Journalist. He was also conferred with the Sikkim State Award – Sikkim Sewa Samman 2013 by the Government of Sikkim. Malavika Rai is a researcher and working as a volunteer with iVolunteerYOU.
