Bengal To Have 3 New Districts By April

The state government finally got the clearance from the high court to form three districts. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that all these three districts – Kalimpong, Asansol and Jhargram – will be functional by April next year.

“Three new districts will be created in West Bengal by April next year. Out of five, we have received clearance for three districts from the court. Government teams would go in the districts to oversee the preparation before the districts finally become functional,” Banerjee told the media at Nabanna on Monday. With the inclusion of these three districts, the number of districts in the state wi ll go up to 23.

Chief Secretary Basudeb Banerjee will go to Kalimpong, Home Secretary will visit Asansol and DG Surajit Kar Purakayasth and Kolkata’s police commissioner Rajeev Kumar will visit Jhargram to oversee the preparation of these three districts very soon. According to the state government officials after the eruption of Maoist problem, Jhargram in West Mindapore was functioning as a police district and now it will become a full-fledged district. Apart from that Kalimpong will be curved out of Darjeeling and the industrial areas of Burdwan will become a new district named Asansol.
