Constable of Banarhat Police station in Dooars commits suicide after his rifle went missing

A constable posted at Banarhat police station committed suicide on Tuesday, allegedly after the Jalpaiguri District Intelligence II hid his rifle while constable Chandan Roy was asleep on duty. Roy (58), a resident of Patchhara Village in Cooch Behar, had fallen asleep on duty when the DI II from Jalpaiguri, Ram Singh, visited the police station. According to sources, on seeing Roy asleep, Singh went to report the matter to duty officer Kumar Tamang. However, not finding him in his office, an irritated Singh removed Roy's Insas rifle from his side and hid it in an adjascent police camp, some 800m away. When Roy woke up, he informed Tamang about the missing rifle. After half-an-hour of extensive, but futile, searching, Roy went to his quarters near the police station and hanged himself from the ceiling fan with a sari. By the time Singh returned to Banarhat police station, Roy had already committed suicide. But since the other cops were not aware of the fact, they continued their search for the weapon. Eventually, cops went to Roy's quarters only to find him hanging. On seeing Roy's body, Singh fell ill and had to be taken to Dhupguri hospital. He was released after primary treatment. Following the incident, senior police officials, including Additional SP Bholanath Pandey, rushed to Banarhat. There were only a few months left till Roy's retirement. A section of constables reportedly alleged that Roy probably ended his life fearing severe punishment after losing his rifle while on duty. Jalpaiguri SP Amitava Maiti said they will initiate a departmental inquiry into the incident. According to reports, police have collected CCTV footage from Banarhat police station to find out what the actually happened. Roy's brother Gobinda has demanded a thorough probe into the incident.
