Day Trip to Bhutan May Be Possible Soon

Image
Thanks to an initiative of the Indo-Bhutan Friendship Association (IBFA), the Indian and Bhutanese governments may soon allow tourists to take a day-trip from Darjeeling to Bhutan without a permit. . There are six different paths to Bhutan from Darjeeling, all of which are currently closed. These paths go through Tode or Bindu in Kalimpong, Lalbasti, the Jiti Tea Estate in Nagrakata, Banarhat and Birpara. For the time being, tourists can only enter Bhutan through the Bhutanese border town of Phuentsholing, and travel to Thimpu - the nation's capital - and Paro. . However, the IBFA hopes to get permission from the Indian and Bhutanese governments for tourists to use all these paths without permits before Kali Puja in October. Kolkata Municipal Corporation Puts Up Hoardings Discouraging 2nd September bandh

Image
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has put up hoardings all over the city asking people to keep offices and shops open and assured every cooperation to them. The Left trade unions have called a country-wide bandh on September 2. The hoardings put up by KMC reads: Keep shops and markets and offices open. Let transport ply normally. The state government will stand by you and KMC will provide every cooperation. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said in the Assembly that the State Government would not support the bandh and steps would be taken to keep the offices open. “We have seen how CPI(M) had crippled the state’s economy by calling frequent bandhs in its 34 years of rule. We are against bandhs and the state government will oppose it,” she said. The state government has decided to deduct a day’s salary for those who will not turn up for work. The state government has decided to ply buses and requested private operators to ply them. The Chief Minister announce

The Beautiful Princess Diana Left Us Today In 1997

Image
It was easy to get caught up in the cult of Diana, which became as strong for the Princess of Wales as it was for her mythological Roman namesake. When she was married in 1981 The Economist itself gushed, “God save the next queen.” Now the cult is immeasurably greater than it was 16 years ago. Books await to be written, perhaps are already being written, about how a 19-year-old kindergarten helper became the most famous woman in the world, and was seen at her death to be an icon of her age. But whatever puzzles the writer may encounter, there will be no shortage of material to ponder over. One of the oddities of many of the articles written about Diana during the past week is that they dwell on her search for privacy. True, she had no privacy, but she appeared content to be constantly on public view. After Lenin died the Soviet government employed researchers to make a record of every day of his life. The reporters and photographers who made Diana their career did the sa

Meet Lalitha Kanwar, Joined Indian Army As A Tribute To Her Martyred Father

Image
Kargil war hero’s daughter Lalitha Kanwar’s eyes would be eagerly searching for her grandmother during the September 10 Passing out Parade of the Officers Training Academy, as she will be fulfilling her mother’s dream of “returning her son back to her.” Dressed in olive green, Lalitha, the daughter of Naik Rajvir Dan of the 15 Grenadiers, who lost his life on June 21, 2000, during Operation Rakshak in Kargil, told Express that the death of her father came as a massive blow to the family belonging to the male-dominated traditional Charan community at Nagaur in Rajasthan, where women are confined to the kitchen. Lalitha was seven when the coffin of her father, draped in the Tricolour, was brought to her village in Nagaur. “My sister told me he won’t be coming back. But, I hardly knew what she meant. I was awestruck as visitors poured into our home. For me, it was less of sorrow and more of pride. I wanted to be like him,” she said. But then things did not go well after th

Setback for Tata Motors - Tata's Land Acquisition for Nano Plant in Singur Illegal: Supreme Court

Image
The agreement that led to 1,000 acres of farm land in Bengal's Singur being allotted to Tata Motors for a Nano factory was cancelled today by the Supreme Court, which called it "bad in law". The land has to be returned to farmers within 12 weeks, the court ordered. Here are 10 developments in the story: The land was acquired in 2006 by the previous Left government. Two years later, the Tatas moved their Nano operations to Gujarat after massive farmer protests led by Mamata Banerjee, who was then the top opposition leader in the state. Even after exiting the land, the Tatas had told the court that the company would not give it up and would use it for other purposes. A spokesperson of the company said on the ruling that its own appeal in the case is yet to be heard by the Supreme Court. The court commented that the Left government had seemed determined that the project must come up in the state, and it was the company which seemed to have chosen the precise location for
