Bengal shuts down all schools, colleges from March 16 to 31 amid CORONA threat

Taking a cue from other states, the West Bengal government on Saturday shuts down all schools, colleges, and several other private educational institutes. 

In a statement, the government informed: "All govt, govt aided, private educational institutions - schools, colleges, universities, madarsahs, Sishu Shiksha Kendra & Madhyamik Shiksha Kendra will remain closed from 16th to 31st March. Board examinations will be held as per schedule."

The number of novel coronavirus cases in the country rose to 85 on Saturday. The total number of 85 confirmed cases includes 17 foreigners -- 16 Italian tourists and a Canadian, the ministry officials said. Amid rising coronavirus cases in India, the government has asked people not to panic, saying no community transmission of the virus has been observed and there have only been a few cases of local transmission so far and that is "not a health emergency" in India at present.

Largest casino chain Deltin enters Sikkim

The country's largest casino chain Deltin Group said it opened its first facility at Gangtok, capital of Sikkim, under the brand name of Casino Deltin Denzong.  The casino, at the Denzong Regency hotel situated 6,000-feet above sea level and offering a breathtaking view of the world's third highest peak Mt Kanchenjuga, comes with 169 gaming positions spread across two levels.  Deltin already runs Asia's largest floating casino, Deltin Royale and also the country's first casino flotel, Deltin Caravela in Goa.  Delta Corp got the licence last July from Denzong Regency Hotel to run the run casino at its premises on lease, Ashish Kapadia, managing director of Delta Corp said.

Class VII girl tries to commit suicide after being gang raped at Jairamkhali village in West Bengal

A class VII girl had gone to mela with 3 youths known to her and her family at Jairamkhali village under South 24-Parganas district in West Bengal. The youths lured her away to an isolated playground and repeatedly gang raped her. In a state of trauma the girl returned home and narrated the incident to her parents. Fearing bad image in village, they reported it to the village panchayat. The panchayat called the 3 youths for a closed door meeting but they soon fled the village with the families locking away their houses. That night itself the girl tried to commit suicide by drinking poison. At the right time she was admitted to the hospital and her life was saved. An FIR has been filed now.
