Protest Halts Tree Chopping in Dooars

The forest department has halted the task of chopping down trees in the fringes of Gorumara National Park for facilitating the construction of a 2km long road over-bridge on NH31 because of opposition from wildlife enthusiasts.

The over-bridge will be built at the railway level-crossing at Bichabhanga, close to Lataguri and 20km from Jalpaiguri.

As officials of the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation arrived this morning to cut down trees to make space for the over-bridge, representatives of as many as 26 NGOs, protested.

"We have come to know that around 570 trees will be felled for the over-bridge. If such a huge number of trees are felled, it would cause a severe impact on the environment," said Anirban Majumdar, a representative of Lataguri Green Label Welfare Society.
