Seven people allegedly raped a 16-year-old mentally challenged girl in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district, the police said on Thursday.
“We have arrested the accused persons who were involved in the gang-rape of a mentally challenged girl on April 2. The juveniles (five minor accused) involved have been dealt with as per law,” district superintendent of police (SP) S Thamar said.
According to the police, the incident took place on March 19 and the matter was only reported in the month of April. According to the FIR, the father of the victim said that on March 19, 2017 at around 6 pm his sixteen year old mentally challenged daughter went for shopping but failed to return home the whole night. Next day, relatives of the girl found her and learnt that she was raped.
This was the second incident of gang-rape in the state in which juveniles were involved. The juveniles are between the age group of 12 and 18 years, the SP said.
While the two adults were remanded to judicial custody, the five juveniles were sent to juvenile homes for observation, he added.
The two adults were charged under section 376(g) of IPC and section 6 of the POCSO Act, Thamar said.
