Good news for students and youths - Several new exhibits come up at Siliguri Science Centre

A new gallery, ‘Light, Mirrors and Images’ was inaugurated at the North Bengal Science Centre on Friday in the presence of Prof. Somnath Ghose, Vice-Chancellor, North Bengal University. Sk. E. Islam, Director, Birla Industrial & Technological Museum, Dr. S. Sarkar, Principal Naxalbari college and other dignitaries.

This fascinating world of Light, Mirrors and Images at North Bengal Science Centre presents the various facets of the inter-relationship among light, mirrors and images in a highly engaging and entertaining way.

Spread over an area of 2500 Sq.ft, the gallery invites you with 32 interactive exhibits which combine science and entertainment in a uniquely action packed ambience to provide the visitors with an unforgettable learning experience.

North Bengal Science Centre is open from 10:30 am to 6:00 pm on all days, except on Holi and Dewali. The entry fee to the centre for general public is Rs.15:00 per head and for organized student group, it is Rs.10:00 per head (for non govt. school students) and Rs.5:00 per head (for govt. school students).

Opened on 17th August.1997 and stretching over an area of 5 acres of picturesque landscape and greenery, the North Bengal Science Centre is an attraction for the people of Siliguri, Darjeeling hills & adjoining areas. Besides its popular galleries and other facilities like the 3D theatre, Digital Planetarium, the centre has sprawling outdoor Science Park and a Mobile Science Exhibition unit. It conducts and organizes various educational programmes for the students and public throughout the year.

Over the years, the centre has become immensely popular and hub of scientific activities in North Bengal. The centre is currently attracting 2.50 lakhs visitors annually and with the opening of the new gallery it is expected to go up further. The centre operates under the direct administrative control of the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum, Kolkata which is the eastern Zonal Headquarter of NCSM.

Middle age man commits suicide by jumping infront of a train near Siliguri

A man said to be in his forties jumped in front of a local train heading to Katihar from Siliguri junction today morning around 11am near Naxalbari station at Panitanki outpost. The body of the man was cut into two halves. Sources say the deceased looks like a Nepali and could be a resident of Nepal as the incident took place near India-Nepal border. The train was immediately stopped after the incident. The body was later recovered by the railway staff and sent for post mortem. Train services resumed after a delay of 30 minutes said sources.

Largest casino chain Deltin enters Sikkim

The country's largest casino chain Deltin Group said it opened its first facility at Gangtok, capital of Sikkim, under the brand name of Casino Deltin Denzong.  The casino, at the Denzong Regency hotel situated 6,000-feet above sea level and offering a breathtaking view of the world's third highest peak Mt Kanchenjuga, comes with 169 gaming positions spread across two levels.  Deltin already runs Asia's largest floating casino, Deltin Royale and also the country's first casino flotel, Deltin Caravela in Goa.  Delta Corp got the licence last July from Denzong Regency Hotel to run the run casino at its premises on lease, Ashish Kapadia, managing director of Delta Corp said.
