6 Killed, 3 Injured in Truck Accident on NH 34

At least six persons were killed and three others were injured when a mini truck carrying pumpkins turned turtle on National Highway-34 on Tuesday, the police said. The police said the truck was carrying pumpkins from Palashi to Haringhata in Nadia district this evening and overturned after the left side wheels of the vehicle fell in a gap in between the road and the curb channel. The driver could not control the balance of the vehicle and the victims got trapped under the load of pumpkins and then the vehicle, the police said, adding six persons riding on the load were killed on the spot and two of the injured persons were rushed to Kalyani KNM Hospital and one to Chakdaha State General Hospital for treatment. The victims have been identified as Kutubuddin Mia (37), Jalil Mia (35), Haran Mia (40), Machiruddin Mia (45), Khakon Mia (28) and Anwar Mia (42), all residents of Nagarukhra village in Haringhata, the police said.

West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday night arrested a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s women's wing, BJP Mahila Morcha, in connection with a recently busted child trafficking racket in north Bengal, officials said. According to reports, acting on inputs, a special team of CID booked BJP Mahila Morcha's state general secretary Juhee Chowdhury from Batasi area near India-Nepal border under Kharibari Police Station limits in West Bengal's Darjeeling district. A senior CID official told IBNS that the BJP leader is being taken to Siliguri for further interrogation and she is likely to be produced before a local court on Wednesday. 60 Crude Bombs Seized in Bengals Burdwan

Acting on a tip off, police raided an isolated house at Haripur village under Katwa Police Station limits in West Bengal's Burdwan district on the wee hours of Tuesday and recovered at least 60 live bombs from the location, officials said. "Today we seized as many as 60 crude bombs and raw materials used for making bombs from Katwa PS area," a senior official of Burdwan district police said. Later those bombs were taken to an open ground and state Criminal Investigation Department (CID)'s bomb disposal unit defused those. However, police have begun probe into the matter, while none has been arrested so far in connection with the case.

Siliguri Police Commissioner has said that police from Pradhan Nagar, Bhaktinagar and Town station worked together to catch these thieves. The arrested are from Rajasthan, Bihar and Siliguri. These people mostly from Rajasthan used to sell blankets during day time and at night used to steal vehicles. Since Siliguri is a place of mixed community, these thieves used to mix around easily. In daytime they used to go around and finalise which vehicle would they steal at night. Police is more investigating into the case.

Shocking: Kerala bishop who spoke against child abuse arrested for raping minor girl

A bishop who spoke against child abuse was arrested in Kerala for alleged rape of a minor which led to her pregnancy, police said on Tuesday. The 17-year-old gave birth to a baby at a private hospital last month and the accused had shifted both the mother and the newborn to an orphanage in north Kerala’s Wayanad to hush up the incident. Father Robin Vaddakumchiryil (48), the bishop of St Sebastian church in Kottiyoor, was arrested after the girl narrated the incident to officials of childline, a telephone helpline for children in distress. Childline officials then tipped off police. The church official had allegedly abused the girl at the computer class provided by the church, police said. A spokesperson of the Thalasserry diocese said the bishop has been taken out of all religious duties. Police said a DNA test will be held on the priest to ascertain to strengthen the case against him. Police have also booked the private hospital, where she delivered a baby, for not informing po

Andhra Pradesh has woke up to a very shocking incident as a private travels bus driver, named Adinarayana, fell asleep at the wheel and drove down the vehicle into a culvert between two flyovers - leaving 11 passengers dead and more than 30 injured. A team comprising officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) went to Delhi in search of BJP Mahila Morcha state secretary Juhee Chowdhury, who is allegedly involved in the Jalpaiguri child trafficking case. Sources in CID said that the decision to go to Delhi was taken after receiving a tip-off that Juhee has taken shelter in the house of a leader of a political party in Delhi. A 26-year-old research associate with Indian School of Business (ISB) died after he fell from the ninth floor of Hill Ridge Springs Apartment at Gachibowli on Saturday night. The victim, Chaitanya Bayanwala, was alone in his flat at the time of the incident. No suicide note was retrieved and police suspect accident as cause of death. Bayanwala is a resident of Siliguri and joined ISB, nine months ago as a research associate in finance department. The number of cases filed by elderly parents against their earning children for not taking care of their maintenance is increasing in Tripura. “Aged parents filed 55 cases in various courts in Tripura in the recent past, against their earning children, demanding maintenance costs,” informed Tripura Law and Education minister Tapan Chakraborty. He further revealed that most of the children against whom their parents filed cases are government employees. “Under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, at least 1,907 cases were filed by women in various local courts in Tripura in the past three years,” he stated. Vehicle Eco Sport from Siliguri was overtaking a pickup van on the four lane highway at Ghoshpukur when the pickup turned left. The Eco Sport driver too further took more left to avoid collision. Hence it landed on road side sand and somehow it's both right side tyres front and back burst. The Delhi police have arrested four persons for gang raping a Delhi University student, who is said to be known to them. There was one other person who has not been arrested so far, police said. According to police, the incident took place in Faridabad. The victim, 20, is a history student in South Campus and two of the accused study in the same college as her.  According to the police, two of her friends, Gaurav and Sunny, took her to Faridabad on a motorcycle on February 3 after a college function for a party. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) personnel on Sunday arrested Anowar Hussein and Morninur Islam from Siliguri and seized three kilograms of yellow metal from their possession. Reportedly, the two accused were arrested from Sevoke market here. DRI advocate Ratan Banik said, "The accused imported gold from Switzerland, used China and Bhutan route to smuggle in Siliguri." The arrested duo will be produced in the Siliguri Sub Divisional Court later in the day.

18 Minor Girls Missing, 14yr Old Found Pregnant in Darjeeling Shelter Home - Trafficking Suspected

A raid in an illegally run shelter home at Pokhrebung on Friday has revealed shocking facts. A 14-year-old pregnant girl was found to be pregnant, while as many as 18 girls of the age 4-16 were found missing from it. The shelter home, that does not have a licence, has been sealed on Friday. The owner is absconding. Based on a complaint by the District Child Welfare Committee indicating woman and child trafficking, the local police raided the shelter home and rescued the pregnant girl who was admitted to a hospital in Darjeeling town. Of the 21 names in the register of the home, three girls aged four, nine and 18 were rescued from neighbours. Police fear the missing 18 girls may have been trafficked. According to police sources, as many as 12 girls under the age of six were transferred from the Sukhiapokhri home to school teacher-turned-alleged trafficker Chandana Chakraborty’s shelter homes in Jalpaiguri in the past six months. In an unfortunate incident near Nongspung village in West Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, An overcrowded truck carrying nearly 70 people rammed into the concrete barricade of the National Highway.  As per reports, the accident took place at around 8:25 am on Sunday. They were going to attend Nonglang Synod. 16 people have died so far, 12 on the spot and 4 have been shifted to Nongstoin Civil Hospital. All people are from Nginiong, Nongbudum and Mawbyrkong villages under Nongstoin PS jurisdiction. The truck was apparently over speeding and the driver could not maneuver the turning. The magistrates, the police, doctors are all on the spot coordinating rescue operations. Injured people have been shifted to Civil Hospital, Nongstoin and Markasa Hospital. Some severely injured ones are being referred to Shillong. Sources say they were going to church.

Elephant Breaks Railway Crossing Gate at Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary in Dooars

An elephant broke down the gate of a railway level crossing at Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary area of Jalpaiguri district in Dooars on Saturday, Forest department officials said. The railway line passes through the reserve forest area. The adult male elephant came from the forest and broke the gate of the railway level crossing. The elephant stayed in the area for around 15 minutes then returned to the forest, the officials said. Read More: Eyewitnesses claimed that the elephant rammed into the boom barriers installed at the crossing. The locals said the elephant found itself stranded near the crossing. Visibly annoyed, it pulled one of the barriers and was later seen trampling on it. Train services on the route were not disrupted as the elephant had left the scene soon after trampling over the barriers. RPF recovers 1500 rare variety of Turtles hidden in 35 bags from a train at Malda railway station

At least 1500 rare variety turtles were recovered by RPF personnel on duty at Malda Town railway station on Saturday, RPF officials said. “The turtles were kept in 35 bags and were brought to Malda by Down 4004 Anandgarh Express from Pratapgarh in UP,” Sub-inspector of crime intelligence branch, RPF, J S Parihar said. “The turtles, all blackish in colour weighed between 200 grams and one kilogram,” he said. Ajay, Suresh and Mahinder, all residents of Sultanpur in UP who brought the turtles from UP to Malda were detained, he said. RPF sub-inspector R R Singh who was on duty checked the bags out of suspicion and discovered the turtles, he said. While the turtles were counted and handed over to the officials of state forest department, the miscreants were handed over to English Bazar police station.

Sleuths investigating theJalpaiguri child trafficking racket have identified two Siliguri doctors - a gynaecologist and a child specialist - of being involved with the gang. The development comes on the same day when a joint probe by CID and the local SDO revealed that main accused Chandana Chakraborty has been shufling records regularly at her second shelter home Ashray , which is also located in Jalpaiguri. Sources in the police said that the SDO, the social welfare officer and cops carried out a raid in Ashray late on Tuesday and recovered two unmarried pregnant women. Both were transferred to aJalpaiguri District Hospital. A 35-Year old truck driver has been arrested by Melli Police in Sikkim following recovery of substantial amount of contraband drugs from his possession. Police have arrested Amber Dhoj Mangar, more commonly known as Bhutta, in a case which traces its root to smuggling of a huge cache of arms from Nagaland to Darjeeling in 2014. Bhutta, a Gorkha Janmukti Morcha activist from Chandraloke in Kalimpong, was picked up by Darjeeling police from his residence yesterday. He was produced in the chief judicial magistrate's court in Darjeeling today, said Pankaj Prasad, assistant public prosecutor. Prasad said: "Joydeep Bhattacharya, the acting chief judicial magistrate, sent him to seven days' police remand. The remand was sought as the police want to find out people who had undergone arms training with a militant outfit in Nagaland and also to trace the huge cache of arms that have entered the hills." Guardians and locals openly distributing cheat sheets to Madhyamik students at Malda

A brawl broke out between police officials and guardians of students appearing for the secondary board exam in Malda. The brawl broke out at the Kalindri High School on the second day of the examination. The face off began after the personnel from the Manik Chowk police station resorted to lathicharge to disuadde the guardians from distributing cheat sheets to the students. Police had earlier warned the guardians not to distribute the cheat sheets. Following the lathicharge, the guardians started pelting stones at the police. The ruckus resulted in severeal police personnel and locals suffering injuries. The area's SP then brought in the Rapid Action Force (RAF). The Jalpaiguri district magistrate said nine boarders couldn't be found at the shelter for destitute women run by Chandana Chakraborty who had been arrested in connection with alleged baby sale though the home's register had their names. "We had sent the subdivisional officer and the district social welfare officer to Ashray on Monday, along with a medical team. They carried out medical examination of each boarder and checked the general state of affairs at the home. Simultaneously, they had also gone through the register and other documents there.
