As Pujas comes near Darjeeling Hills Tea Garden workers forced to agree to 19% Bonus

What happened in labour negotiations yesterday was deplorable. Merely 9 days ahead of the biggest festival in our hills, Dashain, the tea garden owners held the workers to almost a hostage like situation.

Forced to choose between ruining their festivals or accepting what was given, the workers yesterday agreed to only 19% bonus this year, a 1% decline in bonus compared to 2015. Despite the fact that this year there was more production, and the price of Darjeeling tea shot up in the international market.

The tea garden owners however agreed to arrear (outstanding) bonus at 20% and the celling has been fixed at Rs 12000.
