Teesta Power Asks People to Stay Away from Teesta River During Reservoir Filling

Teesta Urja has taken out a public notice asking people to stay away from the Teesta river and not allow livestock to graze near the reservoir periphery or in downstream areas from Chungthang to Dikchu. The notice also advises that all operations like picnic, fishing, boating, swimming, collection of river materials and washing near the banks of the river should not be conducted during reservoir filling and testing.
The Unit Commissioning process of 1200 MW Teesta Stage 3 hydel project at Chungthang, North Sikkim has commenced from 5 September. This includes reservoir filling and charging of the water conductor system. During the process of filling of the reservoir, water level in the river will fluctuate at different times. The water level of the downstream Powerhouse at Sankalang shall also increase suddenly due to release of water from the Powerhouse.
Teesta Urja said that sirens and hooters shall be installed at various locations to warn the public on each increase or decrease in the water level of the river. The company has said that it will not be held responsible if anybody enters the river ignoring the suggestions.
