The tourist footfall has increased and simultaneously, new destinations, accommodations and infrastructure have come up across the hills. The industry is no longer limited to Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong. It has spread into villages. Hundreds of homestays have come up in rural pockets where tourists are visiting. Rural youths have bought vehicles and several others have indirectly got involved in tourism now. It is evident that socio-economic improvement of hill residents has happened due to growth of the tourism sector," Binny Sharma, the spokesperson for Darjeeling district (hill) Trinamul, said today. Image
The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha-backed tea union that is the largest in the hills has refused to attend tea bonus talks on October 3, upset that Siliguri was chosen as the venue. Suraj Subba, the general secretary of the Morcha-backed union, said: "We have been informed that the meeting for bonus rates will be held in the joint labour commissioner's office in Siliguri. The meeting to settle bonus for hill gardens has always been held in Darjeeling. We will not attend the meeting in Siliguri." There are 87 tea gardens in the hills. Bonus rates are usually finalised at bipartite meeting between the unions and the management. This year, no agreeable rate has been finalised, despite holding four rounds of meetings between the unions and the management. With the bipartite meeting failing to redress the issue, the Darjeeling Tea Association ha

Image
The Trinamul Congress today held rallies and meeting across the hills to "thank" the people for purportedly rejecting the bandh called by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha yesterday. Today, Trinamul held marches and meetings in Darjeeling, Kurseong and Mirik. The ruling party did not hold any such programmes in Kalimpong and only thanked the residents over the public address system. In Darjeeling and Kurseong, the processions were led by ministers James Kujur and Rabindranath Ghosh, respectively. West Bengal: X-ray Test To Save Teenagers From Getting Into Sex Trade

Image
In order to curb the increasing numbers of the adolescent and teenager girls from entering into the sex trade, an  X-Ray test is being used to stop underage girls from getting into the trade. This X-Ray test is being conducted across West Bengal by Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee, a sex worker’s organisation with around 1.30 lakh members. “Most of the time girls lie when we ask them if they are above 18. Sometimes, it is really tough to determine whether the girl is 16 or 18. To ascertain their real age an X-Ray test is now conducted.” Mahashweta told PTI, as reported by Business Standard. “The age of a girl can be easily determined by conducting an X-Ray of wrist and waist. It is the easiest way and is practised in western nations to prevent underage girls from entering flesh trade.” says Samarjit Jana, principal of Sonagachi Research and Training Institute (SRTI), an NGO which works with Durbar. Sonagachi is the Asia’s largest red light zone. It is also the first to roll out such

So, we have decided to install high-tech wireless CCTV cameras at some strategic locations on the campus. The advanced surveillance system will have cameras with high-sensors that will be programmed to raise an alarm upon d

Despite warnings of pay cuts and licence cancellation, Darjeeling Hills completely shuts down

Image
A 12-HOUR strike in Darjeeling district Wednesday, which had become symbolic of one-upmanship between the Gorkha Mukti Morcha that had called it and the ruling Trinamool Congress that tried to foil it, ended with the GJM calling it a “near complete success” and the TMC calling it a failure. Many in Darjeeling, in fact, see the government overdrive to foil the bandh as having backfired. Over the past two days, directives were issued by the government, backed by a Calcutta High Court order that deems strikes and bandhs unconstitutional, to offices, schools and transport operators. Another ostensible reason for people staying indoors was the fear of violence, so intense had the build-up been. 304 GJM members including Kalimpong MLA Sarita Rai were arrested as “preventive detention”. TMC members allegedly broke the lock of the municipality office. The strike was called by GJM chief Bimal Gurung to challenge Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s claims that over Rs 4,000 crore had been given

Madang Tamang Murder Case: Calcutta High Court to Hear Anticipatory Bail Pleas

Image
The Calcutta High Court today said it will hear anticipatory bail prayers of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) chief Bimal Gurung and 23 others in connection with the Madan Tamang murder case, in which all of them are accused. Rejecting CBI’s contention that the high court cannot hear the anticipatory bail pleas as the investigation is being monitored by the Supreme Court, a division bench comprising Justices Ashim Kumar Roy and M M Banerjee said that it will hear the petitions on October 3. The bench said since the charge sheet in the case was filed by CBI before a Kolkata court and arrest warrants were also issued by it against the accused persons, the high court has the jurisdiction to hear the anticipatory bail petitions. It had earlier granted relief to Gurung and the other accused persons by directing CBI not to arrest them before disposal of their anticipatory bail prayers. CBI had on May 29, 2015 filed a charge sheet against the GJM leaders under IPC sections for murder and c

Demand for Gorkhaland Returns - Since 1970 the people of Darjeeling Hills is demanding Gorkhaland

Image
The demand for a separate Gorkha state is an issue that since its first origins in the 1970s has dictated politics in the hills. In 2009, Mamata Banerjee’s proximity to Bimal Gurung was a cause of great concern for the Left. At the time, Gurung-led GJM had perfected the bandh-boycott movement in their Gorkhaland movement – indefinite shutdowns, boycotting government taxes, telephone, electricity bills, blocking national highways to paralysing panchayats. As a 12-hour bandh returns to Darjeeling, it is apparent that while a lot has changed since 2009 – some things haven’t. Prime among them is the sheer fervor of the Gorkhaland demand – a fervor that Bimal Gurung, now on the back foot hopes will provide him enough ammo to combat friend-turned-foe Mamata Banerjee as she continues her tactic of dividing the hills, combining development with the creation of different boards. Meanwhile, Darjeeling waits, anxiously. Bimal Gurung and Gorkhaland, today On the face of it, the 2016

Kalimpong Girl Assaulted and Abused at Siliguri in Broad Day Light, As People Look On

Image
In another case of disgrace and humiliation, a girl from Kalimpong was abused and beaten up by a person in Siliguri in broad day light. The case of molestation and assault also points a finger towards the indifference shown by the people when a girl was being abused and beaten up right before their eyes. Here is the complete story, in the words of the victim herself: “It was around 10:30 a.m. when I took an auto for Court More from Medical to attend my maths class which had to start from 11 a.m. It was a normal affair and I didn’t feel anything unusual with other co-passengers inside the auto. It was when the auto started running that I noticed a man staring at my thighs. I was wearing a pair of ripped jeans and some parts of my thigh were visible through it. I however ignored it, and thought that he would stop staring, not wanting to create a scene. But he didn’t stop.
